A 12-year-old girl was on Friday taken back to her home in Kitui after she was found working for her relative in Athi River town.

Mavoko Sub-County children's officer, Faith Kamau, said the child had travelled from her rural home to stay with her aunt for the August holidays.

"The woman forced the girl to work for her on arrival at her Makadara house in Athi River town. She told the minor to find ways of earning food," said Kamau.

Kamau said the woman who has a three-month old baby, claimed her boyfriend had abandoned her and therefore needed help.

She revealed that the girl then joined children from slums within the town to collect plastics and scrap metal which she sold to the dealers for Sh100.

She said her office summoned the woman after the child was rescued by members of community policing organisation from Athi River location.

"Members of community policing from Athi River location who rescued the child brought her to my offices together with a sack of plastic items which she had collected that day," said Kamau.

She said her office sent the child to her home in Kitui County to enable her continue with her primary education.
