Residents of Chuilambo in Kisumu County have been urged to embrace zero grazing in rearing their cattle.

The Agro Growth NGO Western Kenya director Priscah Chepkwony said many farmers in the area had embraced tethering which is not beneficial in modern day farming.

"Nowadays any agricultural activity is centered on making profit, that is why I am encouraging farmers in this area to embrace zero grazing. This can be aided by the fact that land here is available in small parcels. Zero grazing does not require a lot of space,” she said.

The director added that zero grazing has more benefits, such as provision of manure for crop farming.

Chepkwony who spoke on Friday morning in Chulaimbo said zero grazing provides a perfect avenue for collection of manure.

"Many times we have had issues to control diseases among livestock, with zero grazing management of diseases and curing is much easier. This prevents the spread of the disease to other animals," Chepkwony told this writer Chepkwony on the sidelines of a demonstration camp..

She said that it was time for farmers to ditch old methods of farming for more profitable modern methods.
