The church fraternity in Kiambu County has been called on to play an active role in reviving the dwindling academic performance in the county.
Speaking during the diocesan education Sunday service on Sunday, Kiambu ACK St. James Cathedral provost, Geoffrey Mungai, told the faithful that they all have a part to play in ensuring that education for all children is enhanced.
The provost said that by supporting children from needy families to access basic needs and education, the overall performance in the sector will improve. He also appealed for contributions from the church for the orphaned and vulnerable children which assists in paying for their education.
Speaking at the same function, Phoebe Kamau a local educationist and the Principal of Kiambu Township Primary School noted that even though there are many children who sit for Kenya School of Secondary Education (KCSE) every year, the transition to tertiary institutions is very low as many candidates only acquire low grades which are not admissible to such institutions.
Kamau said that due to low transition to tertiary institutions, those who drop out at form four level are locked out of the job market.
“Were it not for the presence of the well performing secondary schools in the county, I think the county could have been ranked among the very last,” said Kamau.
She challenged all education stakeholders, including the church, to actively play their roles to move the county forward as far as education is concerned. She said that achieving good education standards will enable the county achieve other development goals.
