The county government health sector is on the alert after it has emerged that smokers are ignoring designated smoking zones within the town’s Central Business District (CBD).
Speaking in his office on Tuesday, County Public Health officer, Samuel King’ori noted that the health of non-smokers was at stake if the behaviour persists.
“We erected smoking zones purposely for use, not for the sake of it being there,” he said.
“As a department, it has come to our attention that our CBD is no longer cigarette free, used filters are everywhere in our streets an indication that smoking zones are not being utilised,” he added.
King’ori said that motorists were their major concern as they usually smoked on transit then end up dropping the used filters anywhere.
“We have placed dust bins at specific points along our major roads which are supposed to be used by a driver who feels it’s hard to stop,” he said.
The county government erected smoking zones at different points so as to minimise the sight of cigarette filters across the CBD and also curb the risk of spreading of diseases associated to tobacco.
Among areas that have smoking zones are near Nacho Square, main bus park, near Coast Bus booking office, opposite the main market among others.
“A crackdown is in the offing for those who will be spotted smoking at non designated points within the city.” He warned.
