Nakuru Catholic Bishop Maurice Muhatia has condemned Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and called for halting of the practice.

“Outdated cultural practices have no value in our society and Kenyans should condemn such retrogressive practices," said Muhatia .

Muhatia said the practice has been overtaken by events and should not be entertained in the modern society.

“There’s no reason why young girls should suffer genital mutilation. This tradition has been overtaken by events," he said.

Muhatia alleged that the culture is flourishing despite efforts being made by religious and political leaders to end it.

“Several young girls are subjected to this cruel culture in spite of concerted efforts to eradicate it,” said the bishop.

The clergyman hailed efforts by many organisations and individuals to eradicate FGM.

“Credit should go to organisations involved in protecting the girl child against genital mutilation," said Muhatia.

He called for enhanced community advocacy work, coordination of Roman Catholic Church, and the local administration in the fight against the retrogressive culture.

Bishop Muhatia was speaking at St Francis Catholic Church in Njoro sub county, Nakuru during a visit to the church.
