A section of religious leaders in Uasin Gishu County want the government to compensate victims of cattle rustling and inter-community clashes in Samburu, Turkana, Baringo and Pokot.
Speaking to journalists in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Bishop Alexander Moi of the Apostolic Overcoming Holy Church of God said that many victims of cattle rustling were living in poverty.
Bishop Moi said that the victims lost their source of livelihood since their cattle and other property was taken.
“The government must compensate victims of cattle rustling so that they can start their lives afresh,” he said.
The Bishop said that several families have lost their loved ones in cattle rustling adding that many women and children have been left on their own.
“In most cases the breadwinners of these families have been killed by cattle rustlers and the government should look into their welfare,” said the bishop.
He also asked the government to streamline security in areas prone to cattle rustling saying the government had a duty to provide security to all citizens.
He also urged politicians across the political divide to unite Kenyans and refrain from utterances that could fuel animosity.
On Monday, Eldoret Catholic Bishop Cornelius Korir urged the government to initiate more peace programmes in areas that are prone to conflict.
Korir said that the Catholic Church would partner with the government to ensure security is realised in conflict prone areas.
