University students in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to quit alcohol and abusing drugs to instead focus their energy on education.
County Alcoholic Drinks and Control Board director Armstrong Rono said that many college students are indulging in alcohol abuse while abandoning their studies.
Speaking when he led a crackdown that seized over 2000 cartoons of illegal alcohol at Moi University, Eldoret Campus on Sunday, Rono decried high number of varsity students abusing alcohol.
He said that alcoholism has been made easier with increased number of bards in and around within university premises.
“University students should take their studies seriously and desist from alcohol and drug abuse, they are paying fees to get knowledge and not to be wasted by alcohol and other drugs,” he said.
Rono said that the ongoing crackdown against illegal alcohol would be extended to universities adding that administrators must work with the government to fight alcoholism.
He ordered the immediate closure of bars and pubs operating near and inside campuses saying they could be selling illegal alcoholic drinks to students.
The director added that bars are required to operate 300 metres from learning institutions
County Alcoholic Drinks licensing officer Cyrus Kireng said licenses of rogue bars have been revoked.
“No more bars will be licensed until the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews and second generation spirits is completed,” he said.
