Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan now wants institutions of higher learning to establish databases for all their students.

Hassan said having the databases will help in monitoring students’ movements and tracking their participation in terror groups.

Speaking in his office on Monday, Abdi said colleges and universities had become soft targets for terrorists whom he noted were radicalising students.

"Students in colleges and universities enjoy a lot of freedom and are difficult to monitor hence the need to keep their key information in databases for monitoring and tracking in case they disappear without a trace," Hassan added.

He reiterated that besides their personal details, colleges should seek to get information on their next of kin, their parents and people to contact in case of an emergency where it will help in getting a lost student easily.

"I urge students to stay vigilant and report any suspicious persons in their midst since by doing so it will ensure that there is adequate security," he added.
