The Kenya Sex Workers’ Association on Monday wrote to President Uhuru Kenyatta appealing for protection and recognition from the government.

The association's coordinator, Felista Abdalla, under whose name the letter is signed, says they are requesting for the right to be free from violence, to be protected by the law and for those behind the bizarre killings in Nakuru county to be arrested and prosecuted.

In the letter, Abdalla emphasised on the need for commercial sex workers to be respected as human beings and citizens of Kenya.

"Above everything, Mr President, allow me to remind you that I am a Kenyan citizen with a Kenyan ID, a registered voter who has voted leaders into public offices," reads a part of the letter.

"I was convinced that with leaders that I voted into office I shall no longer be subjected to this violence, I am utterly disappointed. Protect us, fight for us, help us; we need you now more than ever to save lives before it is too late," the letter continues.

The loud cry comes barely a day after a commercial sex worker was found killed in Nakuru County where her face was skinned, eyes and private parts mutilated.

Kanu Street residents in Nakuru say three other sex workers have met the same fate in the area.

The association claims an estimated 40 sex workers are murdered every month across the country. The letter also claims that in a span of seven days, six commercial sex workers have been murdered; four in Nakuru, one in Kisii and one in Nanyuki.
