Mavoko assistant county commissioner, David Tegutwa, has condemned outdated cultural practices in the region arguing they were dragging development.
Speaking from his offices in Athi River Town on Wednesday, Tegutwa said it is time for practices like Female Genital Practice (FGM) among communities in the region were abolished to allow the girl child achieve her constitutional right to education.
"Communities from Mavoko should stop outdated cultural practices that violate constitutional and fundamental rights of the victims," said Tegutwa.
Tegutwa noted that most children from the region who had been secretly undertaken FGM had either dropped from school or totally failed to be admitted for basic compulsory primary education.
He said that the challenge was persistent in Mavoko given that it is metropolitan and several members of communities that practice FGM had settled in the area.
Tegutwa attributed the outlawed practice to high levels of ignorance among parents.
He said provincial administration from the region was keen to stop such vices by conducting intensive sensitisation and awareness campaigns against outdated communal cultural activities for the best interest of the child.
Tegutwa, however, warned that police would arrest any parents or individuals found or suspected to be engaging or being accomplice to the vice in Mavoko and its environs.
