Maseno residents were on Thursday empowered with information on effective family planning by Mama Care, a community-based organization.

The seminar that kicked off on Wednesday was led by Plato Griffins the head of Mama Care. The event enlightened the community on family planning by giving information on different ways of managing their families. They also educated the community on the importance of having smaller manageable families.

Some of the ways highlighted were use of condoms, use of family planning pills, and avoiding polygamy. Emphasis was put on effective use of condoms as a way of reducing the risks of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies.

Griffins also urged the community not shy from use of family planning pills saying that they are safe.

“Family planning methods are safe; they help us plan our families so that we can effectively manage them giving our children the best upbringing. You should not shy embracing this means. Open up with your partner and speak up. Be true to your partner.” said Griffins.

The residents responded positively turning out in large numbers. The organization offered free private guidance and counseling. They also urged the members to know their HIV status.

The residents were pleased with the move saying it was a very productive one and they are hoping for more of the kind.

“I thank this group for enlightening us with these important life skills. Most of us were ignorant believing that this family planning leads to infertility and breakdown of families we have now gathered the sufficient knowledge we require. We hope you continue extending the same to other counties.” said Joyce Adhiambo, a resident of Maseno.

Dennis Ombongo, a health officer at Maseno applauded the move saying the enlightenment of the community will help curb some of the deadly diseases such as AIDS and STD’s and help build healthy sustainable families.
