Residents in Nakuru have asked Nakuru county government to educate them on the constitution.

Echoing their sentiments, constitution expert Leonard Githae said the debates that were centred on the new constitution before it was passed were non-significant hence the need for the civic education.

“It is at this time when people are realising that they should have debated more on issues such as financial procurement. However, the debates were centralised to the positions of power and abortion,” said Githae.

He spoke on Thursday at a meeting at the Legacy Hotel in Nakuru to mark five years since the promulgation of the constitution.

He insisted that there was need to analyse the constitution especially to the lawmakers. “Even some of our leaders do not understand it yet it is the one that put them in power,” he added.  Githae said that civic education should be carried out more often.

Participants lamented that many did not understand how the constitution had changed their lives.

Patrick Kinyua faulted other leaders for not taking the day seriously.

“Even the governors and senators who are in power because of the gains of the new constitution did not take time to celebrate the day,” lamented Kinyua.
