Kiambu County will partner with Right@Home Rehabilitation Centre to help reformed alcoholics once all the paperwork has been dealt with.
The home's proprietor, Gladys Chania, who deals with drug and abuse cases in Thika and beyond said the county government has contacted her but they have not written to her legally to start the process. She added that the rehab programme will be undertaken by the county’s public health department..
“I have been offering the services to the victims in private programmes and now that the county government is using my facility, I am sure we are going to help many who have been suffering from these challenges,” Chania said.
Chania said that the youths to be used in the programme as Trainers of Trainers (TOTS) are those who have education empowerment but who are jobless. She said this factor will make it easier to reach those who are struggling with drug problems.
Under the World Health Organisations (WHO) regulations, those undergoing rehabilitation have to be under a helper’s care for a minimum three months.
At a meeting with the Kiambu youth representatives on Wednesday, Youth Affairs CeC, Machel Waikenda, said that the youth will be trained on alcohol and drug abuse, treatment and rehabilitation. Afterwards, they will be engaged to do community outreaches in the 12 sub-counties of Kiambu.
He said that he has prioritised the addicts to ensure they are helped to recover quickly and also help them stop using drugs entirely.
The CeC has called on the parents and public with addicts that needs help to register in their respective sub-county headquarters to ensure they are catered for in the first enrolment which commences next week.
Already, the county government has 13 centres in all level four and five health facilities in the county which can be used by those already experiencing withdrawal symptoms. This is after the crackdown on illicit brews left many outlets closed.
In a statement to media houses, Mwangi said the facilities can be accessed at any time. He added that the county has acquired the necessary emergency medication and organised for all the health care providers to respond to those with acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
