A number of residents from Kiamokama region in Nyaribari Masaba constituency have lauded the Kisii County government for the newly constructed horticulture market.

The market, which will be the largest horticulture centre in Nyanza region, cost the county government Sh10 million and is expected to serve the western region of the country.

Led by Kisii county assembly majority chief whip Henry Moracha on Tuesday, they said the market was a big boost to the horticulture farming since most residents were compelled to take their farm produce to Kericho and Nakuru counties.

“We are really happy of what our county government has done," Moracha said.

"Agriculture is the key sector in our county and the county government has maximised on improving it. The construction of this market is a big boost to the locals here and perhaps will improve the livelihoods.”

They hailed the administration of Governor James Ongwae for its efforts in empowering farmers but challenged the executive to increase the annual allocation towards farming.

“The county government is doing extremely well and there is no doubt about it. We will always support the county leadership although we need the county assembly to increase the allocation of agriculture from the current Sh300 million to at least Sh500 million. Hope the chief whip will table that,” added Mr Pius Omwebu.

The horticulture centre will be officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Kisii county government on Tuesday next week in a grand ceremony that will be done at Kiamokama stadium.
