The Mombasa County government has pledged to support residents of Owino Uhuru slum in Mikindani who are suffering from effects of lead poisoning.
Most of the residents from the area are suffering from lead poisoning from a factory in the area.
The factory was recently closed after it was suspected to be producing poisonous lead.
Health Chief Executive Binti Omar said the county government will do its best to assist the affected families by conducting monthly health assessments and provide treatment.
Ms Omar said the county government took blood samples of about 500 people from the area to be tested and about 95 per cent of the blood samples were found to be positive with lead.
The county government however, could not carry out more blood tests on the affected families due to the breakdown of the analysis machine at the government chemist.
The exercise is expected to resume when the machine is fixed.
“The blood samples taken from the residents were found to be lead intoxication positive," she said.
"We will continue with the testing programme. This area has more than 2,000 residents who need to be tested. The monthly assessment will help us come up with data on the affected families and treatment procedures.”
A woman who had high levels of lead poisoning in her blood died last month prompting the county government to provide drugs to reduce the lead content.
Ms Omar who was speaking at the slum on Tuesday said the county government will set up a clinic nearby where the residents will seek medical treatment since the hospitals are far away.
