The county government of Nyamira has been challenged to expedite construction of a local stadium, whose construction commenced in 2014 but has seen little progress since then.

The Nyamaiya Stadium was launched after various sporting organisations from Nyamira South made an official request to the county leadership with county assembly prompted to set aside Sh5 M for the commencement of the construction.

But on Tuesday, the situation was different with Nyamira South Sports Chairman Kennedy Onsumu pointing an accusing finger to the county leadership for the stalemate.

“The county government has not communicated yet on the situation. No construction has started even after governor John Nyagarama ordered immediate construction, at least to a certain level that can allow hosting of events. They have to expedite the process,” he said.

Mr Onsomu said the stadium will be a major source of revenue for the county leadership if completed since it would host most sporting activities and questioned the silence of area MCA Laban Masira on the matter.

“The advantages of a stadium are many, given the revenue that will be collected from sporting activities. Mr Masira was put in charge of the exercise but he has gone silent over the issue,” he added.

Mr Masira, who is also the Leader of Majority admitted the delays but blamed the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture for the stalemate.

“The construction was not budgeted for in the 2015/16 budget and the Sh5 M that was promised by the governor did not materialise. However, I have written to the Ministry of Youths and Sports to do a supplementary budget since the project is worthwhile,” he said, on phone.
