Eldoret West OCPD Smollets Munyanzi has faulted the Uasin Gishu county government for not putting in place proper mechanisms to handle disasters.

Speaking in his office on Friday, Munyanzi said police are always forced to handle most of the disasters that happen in the region since there is no one else taking responsibility to do the same.

He cited a recent fire incident at Raiply where they had to use fire engines from different departments with little success as one of those that caught the government unprepared.

“If we had a good disaster management mechanism, the fire could have easily been contained,” he said.

According to him, the culture of letting the police be the only resort in such situations will compromise the safety of the public.

“When anything happens, everyone is made to believe that the police are going to handle it, which is so wrong. Disasters are different,” he added.

Munyanzi called on the concerned authorities to take action and create an active disaster management unit that will serve when disaster strikes.
