Nakuru East MP David Gikaria has asked the county government to create jobs for young people in order to prevent them from abusing alcohol and other drugs.

Speaking to journalists in Nakuru Town on Monday, Gikaria said young people need to be kept busy to curb cases of alcoholism.

The MP said that unemployment is the major cause of alcoholism in the county.

“The county government and other stakeholders must strategise on how to create employment for our young people,” he said.

Gikaria said that youths could easily re-lapse to drinking if they are not kept busy adding that it’s the government responsibility to provide employment to the youths.

Gikaria said the delay in creating jobs and other empowerment programmes is pushing many youths into crime.

The MP however lauded the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews and liquor saying that it has restored some calm and order in most parts of the constituency.

Gikaria said there has been law and order the since crackdown began three weeks ago adding that young people are now taking part in meaningful activities.

“We are happy to see our young people and elderly persons sober and ready to work with us leaders in development,” he said.
