The government plans to put up two dams in the upstream of Nyando River Basin to address floods in the region.

Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the two dams will be built in Koru and Magwagwa to contain floods.

Wamalwa said the dams will also provide water for irrigation to produce food crop and water for domestic use.

He said flooding in the region will be dealt with once the two dams are completed.

“The government has plans to address the flood menace permanently. The two dams are being constructed very soon to deal with this situation,” he said.

Speaking when she visited Jane Anyango who has been a victim of the annual flooding in Nyando Constituency on Tuesday, Wamalwa said dykes in the area will be strengthened as a short gap measure.

Anyango of the Serikali Saidia fame thanked the government for responding to her constant pleas during rainy season.

She further appealed to the government to build her a home far away from the flooding area.

“I am very happy the government came calling. I am appealing to the government to build me a home far away from her so that floods cannot be a problem to me anymore,” he said.

Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma who was present said the cries of Anyango have made the government to respond to address the perennial flooding.

Ranguma said the national government is doing a lot in the area and the flooding menace will be a thing of the past.

He appointed Anyango to be the ambassador of disaster management in the county.
