Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma has told parents to stop hiding children living with disabilities and instead take them to school.

Ranguma said some parents were notorious in keeping their children who are disabled away from school.

He said children who are disabled have a right to education and life.

Ranguma said disability is associated with stigma and told parents to stop such habits noting that the county government is now mainstreaming education for the disabled persons.

“I am appealing to parents not to keep their disabled children in the house," he said.

"Take them to school and show them some love."

Speaking in Kisumu during a dinner with four United Kingdom MPs on Tuesday night, Ranguma said girls’ education challenge is enormous.

He said girls who are disabled are often locked out of school.

He thanked Leonard Chesire Disability programme in the county for addressing the issue.

Ranguma said there was hope for such children in the society and called for a mindset change to be able to ensure such children receive better education.

The governor said schools that are being built under different projects including Kisumu Urban Project must have facilities that are friendly to people with disability.

“I am putting structures that are friendly to children with disabilities across the county. I am firm on that,” he said.
