A former senior lecturer in the University of Nairobi has called on the government to review its education system to enable persons living with disabilities to be educated for free.
Speaking during a public lecture at Kisii University Nyamira campus, Dr Jaspher Orina said there is a need to empower people living with disabilities so that they can fully support themselves. That can be achieved through offering free education for them not only in primary but also in higher learning institutions.
He said many disabled people in the country cannot afford to pay any amount of fee and therefore both the national and county governments should commit resources and funds to facilitate their education.
“The disabled have potential in various capacities and this can only be tapped when the disabled are given a chance to pursue education like other people who are physically fit,” said Orina.
He urged county governments to revamp the local special schools with resources to enable children with disabilities receive training in different fields.
This comes barely a day after people leaving with disabilities in Nyamira called upon the county government to consider them in job vacancies in the county.
