Public health officers from Thika West sub-county on Thursday closed down hotels, butcheries, soup and mutura joints in Engen, Phase 6 and Makongeni areas in a surprise raid.
The officers said they were enforcing a directive issued early this year by the county government requiring unhygienic and unlicensed food joints to be closed down.
The directive had been issued in May by Kiambu Health committee executive following a cholera outbreak in the county.
"We have noted that the joints we closed down in May and June for hygiene reasons are back in business yet they have not met the requirements we asked them to satisfy," said Jane Wanyoike, the sub-county Deputy Public Health Officer.
Wanyoike said the raids will continue next week in other areas of the sub-county to ensure that all those operating food joints and eateries adhere to public health standards and requirements.
"Our department in this sub-county has initiated a policy of being proactive than reactive. We won't be waiting for disasters to strike to start looking for loopholes. The raids will continue in other areas in the sub-county," she warned.
