Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Ekerenyo in Nyamira North now want the government to explain the criteria it used to classify them as integrated IDPs that subjected them to compensation of Sh10,000, as opposed to total IDPs who received up to Sh400,000.
Led by North Mugirango aspiring MP Justus Ombune, the IDPs accused the Ministry of Planning and Devolution for discriminating against them in awarding of the funds and threatened to hold demonstrations against the leadership of CS Ann Waiguru whose docket has the jurisdiction to settle them.
According to them, the ministry did not carry investigations to ascertain their IDP status and only released the little funds after pressure that was piled by area Senator Okong’o Mongare.
“It’s quite surprising our people were regarded as internally integrated IDPs yet they lost their property and even loved ones in 2007/08 PEV. We want the ministry of devolution to give explanations to that before we go to streets. It’s unfair to subject them to peanuts yet some people were highly paid,” Ombune said.
They demanded fresh audit of the IDPs by the government to identify genuine beneficiaries of the government compensation.
“In fact we need a fresh audit of the genuine beneficiaries and we suspect the ministry might have paid wrong people. Also as their leaders, we will accept nothing less than classifying them as total IDPs because they can be able to substantiate that,” Ombune added.
They urged parliament to push for proper audit of beneficiaries and give an authentic report that could help them get justice by getting compensation from the government.
