Speaking to this writer on Friday, The Save A Child NGO Kisumu County branch coordinator Tom Owek said it had come to their attention that a number of parents are not talking education of their children seriously and had failed to enrol them in schools.

“We have a good number of children who are not in school, and I take this opportunity to request parents to brighten their children's future by taking them to schools. The free primary school education was meant for them,” said Owek.

Owek who was speaking on Friday morning on the sidelines of sensitisation campaign on education in Ahero said parents who fail to take their children to school risk facing punitive measures as it was against the law.

“Many parents have cited poverty and they don’t want to take their children to school because according to them, after primary school they will not have money to pay for secondary education. That's a wrong notion to have. After class eight, things will take care of themselves, because nowadays we have loans and bursaries for students,” added Owek.

He said that in the current world those without formal education will find it hard adapting in the society and parents should not subject their children to such difficulties.

Owek was speaking during a campaign dubbed ‘Elimu haki ya mtoto’, a campaign that seeks to increase enrolment of children to schools from the area.
