The national government has been urged to step up efforts in equipping hospitals with cancer treatment equipment to help more patients access affordable treatment .
The National Alliance party (TNA) Kiambu coordinator Gladys Chania also said there is need for the government in collaboration with other stakeholders to carry out public awareness on cancer before it causes a threat to the nation .
“The government should intensify its campaigns on cancer and roll out strategies to cope with the killer disease. With modern equipment in hospitals, the agony of seeking specialised treatment abroad will be a thing of past," said Chania.
Speaking on Wednesday in Kiambu Town, during a fundraiser in aid of a patient seeking financial assistance to access cancer treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Chania also urged county governments to support the national government plan on the fight against cancer.
In February the national government rolled out a Sh38 billion project to lease medical equipment to 94 hospitals in the counties, which she says some counties are yet to sign.
Chania urged residents not to ignore the doctors' calls for regular screening .
