Residents of Kinungi, Naivasha Sub-County have petitioned the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to erect speed bumps at Kinungi trading centre, along the Nairobi -Nakuru highway to curb road accidents.

The residents said lack of bumps at the 'blackspot' has contributed to the increase in road accidents.

They claimed that over 200 accidents have been witnessed since the beginning of the year and fear that the number could rise if action is not taken.

James Kabono , chairman of Kinungi Nyumba Kumi said crossing the road at the centre has been dangerous to road users especially school-going children .

“A number of children have lost their lives while crossing the road,” said Kabono.

He said unless the speed bumps are erected, the situation may have far-reaching effects to road users.

“We will continue losing more lives unless an action is taken urgently to erect bumps to reduce road carnage,” said Kabono.

Speaking Tuesday at Kinungi trading centre after rescuing a child who was injured by a speeding car, Kabono petitioned the highways authority to move with speed and erect the bumps.

“Erection of speed bumps is the solution facing Kinungi road users,” said Kabono.

He, however, warned those intending to erect bumps without the authority’s consent to hold on and give KeNHA time to address the issue.

He also advised parents to keep their children, especially those who are out of school busy.

The injured child was treated at a private hospital and discharged.
