A politician in Nyaribari Chache, Rachael Otundo has said indiscipline of school going children is contributed by excess freedom they are accorded.

Speaking on education day for Keumbu Division schools held at Amasago primary school, Mrs Otundo suggested reintroduction of some degree of corporal punishment for schoolchildren.

Otundo also attributed erosion of morals among students to stakeholders in the education industry, especially parents, who she says fail to bring up their children appropriately.

“Our children have developed negative behaviour and that is why we have so many cases involving school going children. Some of them feel oppressed that prompts them to engage in heinous acts like burning of dormitories,” she observed.

“The students should not be given leeway because this is causing a lot of trouble in our country. I don’t support corporal punishment but it worked well in the past and that is why you could not hear of what we are experiencing at the moment,” she added.

Otundo challenged Members of Parliament to amend basic education examination laws that she says make students feel oppressed and engage in destructive acts like burning schools as an escape strategy.

However, she accused MPs of passing certain bills without involving other key stakeholders, and instead told them to engage all interested parties, including the public as provided in the constitution.
