Residents of Kiogoro ward in Kisii have challenged area traffic police to expedite investigations of accidents involving pedestrians in the busy Kisii-Kilgoris road.

Speaking at Kiogoro on Wednesday during the burial of Mrs Alice Nyaboke, who is said to have succumbed to her death after being involved in a hit-and-run accident along the road, the residents condemned careless driving.

According to them, victims of such accidents have never been accorded justice, saying the police officers involved drag the cases, making the perpetrators evade punishment.

“Our concern is the manner in which police officers carry out investigations even after we record statements. Many of the victims end up being frustrated and sometimes die because of lack of care. They are never compensated by their perpetrators,” said Mr Tyson Ogembo.

They urged the officers involved in investigations to incorporate them as witnesses whenever such accidents occur in a bid to avert more casualties in the region.

“What is funny is that police only demarcate the scene of crime and from there, we hear that they are investigating. But these investigations are never concluded. The perpetrators get an avenue to bribe the police and to sabotage justice,” added Mr William Mounde.

Kisii OCPD Solomon Keragu vindicated the police officers by terming the accusations as ‘outrageous and unfounded’ but urged residents to feel free and present information.

“Police have been doing their job. When it is a hit-and-run, we find it difficult to impound the drivers who cause such accidents. Residents along the highway should be vigilant and help us identify such criminals,” he said.
