Naivasha flower farmers have been challenged to use the new breed of rose flowers that researchers have successfully used to boost production.

Plant researchers have breeded a new variety of rose flower that has the potential to produce good and quality yields.

Speaking yesterday in Naivasha, Kenya Plants Health Inspectorate Service managing director, James Osando, said the new breed of rose flowers is resistant to diseases and adaptable to all kinds of weather.

“We want to encourage flower farmers to try the new breed of rose flowers,” he added.

Osando said that the variety which has been approved by the global flower industry takes a short time to mature.

He said when commercialised, the rose flower variety will earn farmers more profits.

The director indicated that farmers will be sensitised on the new variety to ensure they get adequate information about the plant before trying it.

He observed that technological progress has made it possible to breed varieties of flowers, noting that the government will invest heavily in technology in order to enhance scientific crop breeding.

He said that Naivasha remains  among key flower producers in   East Africa region which contributes a large per cent to the country’s economy.
