Hundreds of families remained stranded for the second day at Rongai sub-county commissioner’s office after their efforts to access their plots at Barina farm in the area proved futile.
The families, who were forced to relocate to different parts across the country in 2007 after the disputed general election, have been locked out of their original plots after a row over the ownership of the land erupted after people having different title deeds started claiming ownership.
Addressing the group at the sub-county commissioner’s office on Wednesday, deputy commissioner David Koech noted that everything was in place in ensuring that they are back in their farms.
“We are trying to figure out what to do because the main proprietors have not yet come to offer relevant documents. As per now, the situation seems to be out of our hands due to the sensitivity of the matter,” he said.
According to Koech, relevant government officers from the county and national government land offices were busy trying to scrutinise documents to identify the true owners of the plots.
He noted that they were keen not to incur a similar situation in 2017 arguing that the issues of people being displaced during electioneering periods had to be done away with.
“A lasting solution must be found because it’s sad that people were losing important resources like land just like that,” the deputy commissioner advised.
The families who have vowed to remain at the commissioner’s office till justice is found have been urged to remain patient as relevant authorities try to face out fraudsters before ensuring each family get back to its real piece of land.
