George Otieno, a field officer from Maseno Agricultural Training Institute said on Monday that Agroforestry is a venture all farmers should engage in as it has all round benefits.

“With agroforestry, farmers can be sure of enriching the soils which improves production. They are also in for economic gains in terms of firewood and should be a venture every farmer should engage in,” said Otieno.

Otieno said that many farmers were worried about the space considering that many from around Maseno own small parcels of land. He said space should not be a concern.

“Even on a small piece of land agroforestry is still possible. All you have to do is get in touch with an agricultural officer on how to utilise the small space,” added Otieno.

Otieno said that the world is fighting to save the environment, and agroforestry can be one of the solutions to climate change.

He said agroforestry increases forestry cover which is key in determining the amount of rainfall. He urged farmers to venture in this agricultural practice but be careful in choosing trees they plan to integrate with their crops, as some trees such as eucalyptus have negative effects to the environment.
