Farmers in Gatundu North have said the high cost of farm implements has reduced the profits they get after selling farm produce.
Gatundu North sub-county Agricultural Officer Agnes Macharia said unless the costs are reduced, farmers will continue to incur loses.
Speaking from her office in Kamwangi on Tuesday, Ms Macharia said there was an urgent need to cut the costs so that farmers do not abandon agriculture.
"High costs of inputs has curtailed efforts by farmers to engage in farming as a business venture," she said.
She recommended that farmers be supplied with quality farm inputs, allowed access to affordable credit facilities and encouraged to form co-operative societies in order to sell their produce at competitive prices.
The official lauded efforts by the National Agricultural Livestock Extension Programme that had assisted the government through involvement in agricultural activities.
"NALEP has assisted the government to offer extension services to farmers free of charge," she added.
The farmer’s boss said the government, through the Kenya Agricultural Productivity Project should continue to offer agriculture extension services to local farmers.
