Farmers in Bonchari Sub-County have received dairy goats from a non-government organisation, Magnum International.
According to Field officer at Sheila Kagani, the goats are allegedly able to produce more milk than others.
“Most people find commercial dairy goat farming a totally new idea as goats are known mainly for their meat. I would like all of them to embrace this new culture so that they can get good income,” she said.
She added that whereas goat meat is has a high demand in the local market, goat milk has also gained popularity as goats require minimal maintenance than other livestock.
Kagani added that her organisation aims at encouraging farmers who practice dairy farming to also diversify into commercial goat dairy farming due to its profitability. She added that goat milk is healthy and nutritious.
She said that the goats being distributed were fast growing and very easily managed as she encouraged farmers to take good care of the goats. Retailing at Sh20,000 each, the goats are said to deliver twice a year. The goats have the potential of producing between 4-6 litres of milk daily with each litre costing between Sh60 – 100.
A total of 141 goats were donated to 12 farmers’ groups.
