Farmers in Kisii interested in venturing into bee keeping have been encouraged to join the sub-sector as the county government embarks of identifying export markets for honey.
Kisii County Chief Executive for Agriculture and Cooperatives Development Vincent Sagwe said farmers in the county who will invest in bee keeping will fully be supported by the devolved unit.
Mr Sagwe said the county government had began identifying key markets for the sweet product both locally and internationally.
He said exportation of the product will start as soon as international markets are identified.
Mr Sagwe said the government will strike deals with neighbouring counties interested in buying honey from Kisii County, adding that the ministry will educate locals on the benefits of bee keeping.
He said the business had succeeded in the county of Bungoma already.
The Chief Executive also said farmers ready to join the business will be trained before being given bee hives by the ministry.
He said bee keeping was a lucrative business that many farmers fear venturing into.
