Uasin Gishu Agriculture CeC has urged farmers to practice farming as a business by venturing into modern technology to increase yields and reduce the cost of production.
Speaking during the second day of the sixth University of Eldoret (UoE) Agribusiness Trade Fair, Cyril Cheruiyot urged farmers to adopt the use of greenhouses and practise modern irrigation methods instead of overly depending on rainfall.
"Farmers should venture into dairy farming, horticulture and also try new crop varieties instead of always depending on maize and wheat which take a long time to mature but has low yields. This will ensure farmers get value for their inputs," he said.
Concerning the anticipated El Nino rains, Cheruiyot urged farmers to construct water reservoirs to collect water during the heavy rains which he says can be used to irrigate crops during the dry season.
He also advised farmers to seek professional guidance from agricultural extension service officers in the sub-counties when faced with difficulties.
"Seek advise on which crops are best suited for planting in particular areas. This will reduce the cost of production and increase productivity," he added.
