Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Fred Sigor has urged farmers to adopt and promote the use and application of technologies in production, agro-processing and manufacturing for the the country to realise food security for its growing population.
Speaking on Saturday at the University of Eldoret Trade Fair, where he represented the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Adan Mohamed, he said that that Kenya's population is really increasing day in day out, therefore the need to be food secure.
"At the moment, Kenya's population is at 42 million and by 2030, the population will be over 60 million, and if we are not prepared, Kenyans will really suffer from food insecurity. I urge farmers to learn new technologies and build a strong foundation for increased agricultural productivity, markets and product development," he said.
He reiterated that agriculture remains the most important sector for the growth of our economy, therefore the need for the government to entrench youth training in agriculture in schools and also empower the private sector to expand the small and medium enterprises in agro-processing as a means of creating jobs for the youth.
He also urged farmers to ensure that they harvest their crops early to avoid wastage during the Elnino rains come October.
