A Japanese and Chinese national were on Thursday remanded by a Kisumu court for staying in the country illegally without the necessary documentation. Chief Magistrate, Catherine Owino remanded Li Chan from China and Xeghou Lizan after the prosecution successfully objected their bail application on the grounds that the two might leave the country in case they are set free, while the case is still ongoing.
Chan and Lizan pleaded not guilty for the offence of illegal stay when they appeared before Owino. They were remanded for one week when they are expected back in the court for the hearing. According to the prosecution the two accused persons were arraigned before the court after being arrested in Kisumu town on July 25. They were arrested at a roadblock when they failed to produce any documents from the immigration department allowing them to stay in the country.
Upon further interrogation, they said that they were working with a construction company whose management had withheld their documents. However upon investigation it was revealed that they did not work for any construction company. The prosecution additionally wanted the two remanded in order to allow time to find out their motive in the country and how they got in. The two were remanded until Thursday next week.
