Residents of Mwitumberia in Gilgil area are still dealing with the loss of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in a dam.
The boy, a form one student, drowned while swimming three days ago with his peers. Irate residents accused the police in the area of laxity when it came to retrieving the boy’s body.
“We have just retrieved the body today yet the police have been coming to the scene every day and have never helped in the process," said Susan Maina, a resident.
Maina said the police often ignored the calls from the public who sought help in collecting the bodies.
“Recently, a woman burnt herself during a domestic strife but the police did not come for her body until it started decomposing,” she added.
She is now appealing to the area leadership to have the police reshuffled.
"They are not interested in helping and looking out for the welfare of the people in the area,” she added.
Joseph Warui, another resident appealed to the county government to create a special unit that would deal with the collection of bodies in the area.
“We are often left wondering what to do in case we have a person who died days ago but cannot be transported elsewhere,” he added.
Contacted, police officers from the Gilgil claimed they responded on time whenever called upon.
“We have not received any formal complaint about the delay in collection of bodies from the area,” said a police officer who sought anonymity.
