Four people died in Thika, Kiambu County on Wednesday morning after consuming illicit brew believed to have been laced with a toxic substance.

More than 10 others were taken to hospital in critical condition after a drinking spree in Kiandutu, Thika Sub County.

This comes barely a week after residents protested over increased illicit brewing in the area which has claimed many lives before.

The liquor, believed to have contained highly toxic chemicals, is alleged to be in circulation in the area amid public’s outcry for the administration to address the matter.

“We have tried to talk to the area chief and the whole administration to address this issue but they have been lax. This could have been averted if they conducted raids on all illicit liquor dens in the area because they know them. We are continually losing our men to these cheap liquors. The government should address this issue with the urgency it deserves,” lamented Charles Kalori, a relative to one of the victims.

Thika police boss Shadrack Maithya confirmed the incident and reaffirmed that police will investigate the case and close all bars selling illicit brews.

He said they would heighten operations in the area to address the menace.

The survivors were taken to Thika Level 5 Hospital where they are recuperating.
