The county government of Uasin Gishu is set to set up a free cancer-screening centre for residents.

The centre, which is to be set up at Sugoi, will be open to all the members of the public for them to get free cancer screening.

Speaking in Eldoret on Tuesday, Miriam Kosgei the County Chief Officer Public Service Management said that cancer cases are on the increase. She says that due to increased mortality related to cancer and lack of adequate diagnostic centres the county government was trying to remedy the situation.

“Recent research statistics show that six out of every 10 deaths are caused by cancer related complications. We need to address this issue," Kosgei said.

The project is a partnership between the county government of Uasin Gishu and the International Leadership Institute (ILI) that also involves training of nurses.

Governor Jackson Mandago during the opening of the training noted that Cancer had overtaken HIV/Aids as the number one killer.

“Cancer has become a threat to the nation of Kenya as a whole and Uasin Gishu not left out," he said.

Mandago added that the screening would play a big role in the fight against cancer. He also said that his government is committed to help promote early detection and manage existing patients.
