Girls at Getare primary school have a reason to smile following a supply of sanitary towels courtesy of Ministry of Education.

According to a class eight pupil in the school, Sara Ogega, the trouble of missing classes would be a thing of the past because she was now sure of maintaining cleanliness all the time.

She said that on several occasions, boys made fun of girls who have soiled their clothes unknowingly, a scenario that embarrassed them and highly lowered their self-esteem.

Another pupil, Faith Magare revealed that the sanitary towels they improvised had failed them all the time and because of the awful smell, most girls stayed isolated from friends or worse still from class for fear that classmates would make fun of them.

She thanked the government for the provision saying they would now attend school without fail and wished that the programme would be sustainable as long as they were in school.

The head teacher of the school,David Miruka said that the number of boxes the school was issued with would comfortably serve girls in the school from class four to eight till next term.

He noted that the trend of staying at home by most girls in the name of the monthly periods had become so rampart even when they were okay and it was difficult to detect when they were telling the truth or lying.

The head teacher further said a female teacher would teach the girls how to use the towels and the biological meaning behind periods.

He thanked the government for such a timely intervention, saying it would curb absenteeism in school.

Miruka appealed to parents to continue supporting their girls especially during the holiday since the girls would still need to maintain the same hygienic standards.

The programme of issuing sanitary towel to pupils at Getare primary school.was started last year.
