Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo has called on parents and guardians to act as role models for their children in a bid to raise responsible and resourceful citizens.
This comes after cases of parental negligence being reported as among the major issues affecting children in Ruiru and Thika.
Speaking in Githurai Town on Wednesday when she met all bodaboda operators, Gathogo said that majority of children indulge in heinous activities due to lack of parental guidance.
The legislator cited cases of school drop-outs engaging in criminal activity. She said parents should always be on the lookout and guide their children.
Gathogo added that teachers alone cannot educate children on life issues as majority of children opt to become like their mothers and fathers when they grow up. She thus urged guardians and parents to be responsible.
The legislator noted that cases of domestic violence should be avoided in the presence of children to enable them have a positive attitude towards marriage. Gathogo also noted that majority of youths today prefer being single not by choice but due to their painful backgrounds and childhood experiences.
“When your child witnesses domestic violence every day, he or she will have a negative attitude towards getting married. That is why we have many single ladies and bachelors in our society,” said the MP.
She urged children to be wise in choosing their role models in life as it is fundamental in their day to day life.
