Persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) in Gatundu South have urged the national government to increase the funds set aside for them to ensure they are in a good position to cope with day to day challenges.
Speaking on Wednesday at Kiamuoria Trading Centre in Kiganjo Ward during a meeting with people living with disabilities in the area, Gatundu South coordinator of PLWDs, Rahabu Wambui, said the money set aside for the welfare of persons living with disability is hardly enough given the high number of PLWDs in the country.
“The money set aside by the national government is little considering the rising number of PLWDs," said Wambui.
She urged PLWDs to keep on pushing for more money to be allocated to their kitty.
“We need more money to help PLWDs so that they can start meaningful income-generating projects," said Wambui.
Wambui however thanked the national government and Kiambu County government for their efforts towards empowering PLWDs.
She also urged Kiambu County government to honour its pledge of allocating five per cent of county jobs to PLWDs.
“The number of PLWDs being recruited by the county government of Kiambu is not encouraging. We urge the county government to offer five per cent of its workforce to people living with disability," said Wambui.
She further urged the national government and the devolved units to give 30 per cent of tenders to PLWDs as it has being stipulated in the Constitution.
