Traders in Gesima market have been cautioned against using public toilets in the market until the county government of Nyamira builds new facilities.

This comes even as the construction of the new facilities stalled after the contractor failed to show up for unknown reasons.

On Wednesday, county chief health officer, Dr Douglas Bosire ordered for the immediate closure of the facilities due to their "dangerous state" saying they also pose health risks.

“The toilets are in a poor state and furthermore they are full to capacity. Continued use will otherwise expose residents to health risks and that is why they have to be closed as we wait for the completion of the new facilities,’ said Bosire.

However, the message was not received well by a number of residents who blamed the county government for the delay and promised to take unspecified actions.

“We are not happy at all now that we do not have an alternative. Closing the facilities isn’t welcome but the question that remains is what are going to use till they complete construction of the new facility?” asked Elijah Ogato.

The contractor is said to have abandoned the project due to limited finances and the county government might be compelled to assign another contractor.
