A member of county Nyamira County assembly has donated ten hospital beds in a local Level 3 hospital in a bid to avert looming crises of holding capacity.
This comes after reports emerged that patients at Gesima Hospital were forced to share a single bed, making it difficult for the hospital’s management to control the situation.
However, the situation was temporarily salvaged on Thursday by Gesima MCA Ken Atuti, who donated ten beds in a bid to increase the holding capacity of the hospital.
Atuti raised concerns about the commitment of the Nyamira department of health to deal with the situation, months after he had made an official request.
"Our people have been suffering with this limited bed capacity even after I made an official request to the county government. This donation is out of an emergency but I hope it is a wake-up call for the ministry of health to act and help residents get effective services,” Atuti said.
According to the MCA, the crisis had led to the death of two residents who could not be admitted because of the limited capacity and subsequently dying on the way to Keroka District hospital.
“Recently you saw what happened to two of our residents and the county government is aware. I want to sincerely urge the leadership to increase the number of beds because we have enough space for the same,” he added.
