Uasin Gishu deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has urged the national government through the Treasury to speed up the disbursement of monies to county governments before they are declared bankrupt and non-functional.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, Chemno said all functions of the county have been paralysed due to lack of funds.
"The national government through the Treasury was supposed to disburse funds to the county governments in July but since then nothing has been done making us operate with zero funds. This has caused us to halt major projects such as construction of roads, bridges, ECDE classes among others since we cannot afford to pay the contractors who are always at our necks demanding payments," he said.
He said the county has been paralysed to an extent that it is not able to pay its workers and also fuel vehicles to inspect ongoing projects.
"We have not paid some of our staff for two months, me included, I have not seen even a single cent, it’s hard for us to operate. I urge the national government if it truly wants devolution to bear fruits, then it should speed up the disbursement of the money to counties to streamline their operations," he added.
