Residents in Kisii County want the county government to start a mosquito net distribution programme to address the prevalent malaria cases in the region.

They have asked the county government to shelf its initiative of getting the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) cards for 800 vulnerable people and instead focus on reducing malaria cases.

Speaking to Hivisasa on Tuesday at Marani, Kitutu Chache North Constituency, the residents led by Shadrack Gekonde, noted that NHIF cards should be given after the malaria prevalence has been addressed.

“If we want to reduce malaria in Kisii County, the county government should first have a programme to distribute mosquito nets to all households and then distribute the NHIF cards later,” noted Peter Makworo Marani, a resident.

Kisii County government promised to buy NHIF cards for 800 vulnerable people in all 45 wards bringing the total number of the beneficiaries to 36, 000.

“We are appealing to the county government to provide mosquito nets as we cannot wait for people to fall sick and then take them to hospital for treatment because we have the NHIF cards,” said another resident, Rebecca Bosibori Ombwori.
