Residents in Kanaani slums, Mavoko Sub-County have called on the state to consider rehabilitating slums in the region.

Addressing journalists in Kanaani on Wednesday, the residents led by their chairman Joseph Okwiri, said the sub-county had several slums hence the need for the consideration.

"We urge the state to consider Kanaani slum and other slums within Mavoko for rehabilitation under the slum upgrading programme conducted by the Devolution Ministry," said Okwiri.

Stela Nyaga, a resident said most of the slums in the region were highly populated with poor sanitation hence posing a health risk to the residents especially children under five years.

"Even though I also live in a slum, I am worried because the conditions are dangerous to human health especially to children under the age of five. I only live there since I have no alternative," said Nyaga.

John Ouna on the other hand, said there were several houses in Mavoko that had been constructed by private investors but were expensive as majority of the residents were low and medium income earners.

The residents said the government should open up the slums that include Mlolongo, Kanaani and Sofia and build septic tanks, proper drainage systems and pit latrines among other various important amenities.

They said the project would also employ jobless and needy youth from the slums and enable them to earn a living as had been observed in other slums where the project had been implemented across the country.
