The Mombasa County government will construct a cancer diagnosis and treatment centre at the Coast General Hospital in the next three months.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho said the facility will benefit many residents in the county who in the recent past were forced to travel to other counties to seek treatment.
Joho said most of the cancer patients in the region travel to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi for treatment.
Governor Joho said, “The establishment of the cancer centre in Mombasa County will boost early detection of the disease.”
“The facility will also reduce the cost incurred by patients who have to travel to Kenyatta National Hospital for the service. The centre will provide radiotherapy and other cancer treatment.”
The governor who spoke at Treasury Square in Mombasa said the cancer centre will be the first of its kind in the region and it will cost the county government Sh7 million to construct.
“The cancer unit at the Coast General Hospital will be ready for use in the next three months and the county government has set aside Sh7 million which will be used for its construction.”
Joho added that his administration has allocated 30 per cent of the county budget in the current financial year to health to ensure affordable and high quality medical care for its residents.
