Yatta sub-county commissioner David Kiiva has expressed concerns over the residents living in the sloppy areas of the region with only two weeks left to the awaited El-Nino rains.

Kiiva said that it is so unfortunate that no one seem to be concerned over them people in the areas despite there being threats of landslides and thus they should be evicted immediately to safer places.

The commissioner added that he has surveyed the areas keenly and noted with concern that the people risk their lives by residing in the region during the rainy season.

"These people are not secure at all. There is need to evict them before the El-Nino and take them to more safer places instead of waiting for the incidences and then striving to act the last minute without proper plans," he said.

The commissioner has revealed that he shared the information with the Machakos county commissioner and expects the both national and the county governments to act with speed to his proposal adding that even the residents should have seen the situation of the mines before he went round inspecting.

This comes a day after over 200 quarry workers in Thika East border to Yatta sub-county were evicted by the quarry land owner who cited the oncoming rains and said that he doesn't want to be held accountable in case of any dangers posed to the workers.

The incident has rendered numerous jobless but left them safe.
